NEWS & ITINERARY

Fall 2009

The really big news is that I have been accepted as a vendor at the
PORTLAND SATURDAY MARKET.

I have been doing Face Painting at the Portland Saturday Market
three times in September. I made $130 on the first day, $81 on the second,
and about $103 on the most recent visit there. The rent per day there is $46
plus some kind of reasonable monthly membership fee.

Three times rent (or $150) would be a good day
Three factors are needed to make this happen.
1. A large crowd of family people with children
2.A central high traffic location
3. Warm sunshine and lots of visible skin

I welcome other face painters - It is not competition
Thousands of people cruise the shows, only a very small number
want to be painted. More painters create more interest and excitement

I am planning to return in the spring when the weather is warmer.
It is difficult to do calligraphy outdoors when I am cold.  I am building a compact
booth which fits in a box and I can trundle it down the street from
my parked car. It will unfold, taking not much time to put up and take down.

Meantime, I am working on opening my shopping cart. My friend Jeff Swain
is helping me put it all together and building the pages while I am supplying the
hand drawn artwork. I am experimenting with a key chain ad in a Military Newspaper
in November 2009. If that gamble works, then Look out!

I PASSED THE MARKET JURY PROCESS! I GOT IN!

It was touch and go for a while. I was initially rejected
because my products were considered to be too commercial.
I was told on the phone that they thought that the background pictures which I submitted
for their evaluation were too "Eighties"  and too generic, because I had obviously not made them myself.
I was informed that they had a woman on the jurying committee who had done some Calligraphy
and she had thought that my calligraphy wasn't very good.
My key chains were considered much too commercial for the Portland Saturday Market
which wanted only hand made crafts sold by the vendors who made them.
(but they said my face painting was awesome!)

However, a couple days later, somebody from the Saturday market office called me
to explain that she had spoken about my work to a houseguest who
had known me from the days when I used to travel with the Harvest Festival shows.
Charles who used to sell fire starters (who I remembered as one of the other vendors there.)
I don't know what Charles actually said about me, but it must have convinced them
that it was OK for me and my stuff to be in the Portland Saturday Market

Now I have to buy an 8 x 8 tent cover, and get my all my equipment fixed up
to fit into the back of my van, and re-design it for quick set up and take down.

I think I'll wait until next spring and the sunshine before I go down there to sell.

Health issues

During the past two years, I have had several "Partial Intestinal Blockage" experiences
The Kaiser surgeon has suggested abdominal surgery, but since every incident has
cleared within a couple hours, and I am very scared of having abdominal surgery,
I decided to not have the surgery at this time..

I want to appreciate all my many customers and the fair staff for your support and interest.
